1970 Love Story
Jenny and Oliver come from entirely different backgrounds, but this doesn’t stop them from falling in love with each other when they meet at college. But when tragedy strikes the meaning of love will be shown, remember though that means you never have to say you’re sorry!
I think I’ve seen this movie many years ago but to be honest I can’t really remember much about it. The only thing I can recall is Jenny’s tragic ending, but watching it again now so many things appear within this film. The biggest one coming from Oliver’s father who does not approve of their relationship due to different social statuses. However luckily for Oliver it doesn’t make a difference and he would gladly give up everything for Jenny.
That definitely makes you value this pure love story. They fight and annoy each other constantly but one thing is for certain they are madly in love and would do anything for each other. It makes me wonder if love exists anymore like this because it just doesn’t seem so. People leave the moment something gets tough and they don’t show any fight to stay together anymore or at least that’s what it looks like when compared to an older film like this.
The film was actually nominated for seven Oscars winning one best music original score, therefore another review towards the Best Picture Project which is an ongoing feature on Let’s Go To The Movies. But watching it now you see the changes in Oscar nominations as I don’t think a film like this would be nominated in this day and age for many awards.
O’Neal and MacGraw have great chemistry together and you really find yourself rooting for them throughout the whole movie. Last year I was actually very close to seeing them both on stage in a play, but O’Neal had surgery so had to pull out of production which then got cancelled. That would have been such a treat to see them acting together again.
The line about love means never having to say you’re sorry really is something that can be taken in many different ways and I will admit I was crying my eyes out during the final scene and Oliver’s confrontation with his father whilst thinking you should have just told him! Even though we all know why he didn’t bother, due to earlier fall out. That part seemed to hit me hardest on this most recent viewing.
It is still really nice to watch a romantic drama which isn’t focused on sex but actually looking at love and how it can change people so much. I doubt very much that Oliver thought he would ever end up with someone like Jenny and vice versa but do you know what they did just work together and that creates a very impressive film which you can not help but smile and cry along with.
