Born Hungry

While it often relies on the conventions of inspirational movies, Barry Avrich’s Born Hungry is a deeply moving film about the life and work of restaurateur Sash Simpson that will leave viewers believing in the power of nurture and cultivation to bring out talent.

Simpson, who was an orphan runaway living on the streets from an early age in India before being brought to Toronto by philanthropist Sandra Simpson – who raised her own biological children alongside dozens more kids saved from dangerous situations can’t recall much about his birth parents or siblings or what caused them to separate but has always wondered. As he ages and starts his own family, Sash realizes that he would like nothing more than go back home again (to India) where everything happened and try find everybody there because even though it seems hazy now still hurts so bad then.

Sometimes Avrich pushes too hard at pleasing a crowd (some songs), but never fails to let us see things as they are through Sash’s eyes only showing until shown. Born Hungry doesn’t just rely on other people talking about their experiences with him; this man tells you exactly how it was. This movie makes its mind up: those long nights wondering why me? How did things turn out like this? What does any of them mean anyway? And should I still care? Sometimes people need answers sometimes all we have left is our questions.

There is also an aspect of cooking involved which comes naturally since throughout his trip back home food serves as way for him not only connect with but understand parts that were missing when he grew up poor alone without mother father brother sister friend guardian teacher mentor role model idol leader god king queen president prime minister doctor lawyer detective spy soldier firefighter astronaut superhero villain victim criminal judge jury executioner savior destroyer etc., so forth ad infinitum forevermore amen hallelujah praise be glory power honor thanksgiving adoration reverence worship love joy peace patience kindness goodness faithfulness gentleness self-control.

While food is definitely a big part of what he’s hoping to find during his time in India, Born Hungry isn’t really about that it’s more personal than any dish could ever be.
