The Fluffy
To say that the Fluffy Movie is one of the first introductions to a comedian, fans will argue, the title surely lives up to expectations. This is the first time I hear about Fluffy (aka Gabriel Iglesias) and from the bits that are given to me, I learn that he is a Mexican-American comedian. Overweight and raised by a single mother who was the victim of domestic violence, Fluffy takes influence from Eddie Murphy and realizes his plans. Back in the days, Fluffy held San Jose HP Pavilion as part of a glam pack (minus the burning stuff from Kevin Hart’s Let Me Explain That).
The Fluffy Movie is a stand-up comedy concert film showcasing Fluffy with plenty of his devoted fans and is quite unusually critic proof. In terms of the fans present, I think that it managed to please Fluffy’s fans present at the screening I went to. However, in terms of gaining new followers, though the comic will hold one’s attention, I certainly did not become a convert.
John Fink○July 24, 2014The reason for my irritation is The Fluffy Movie or as it should probably be called: ‘Gabriel Iglesias Let’s Promote My Brand’. Based on the brief introduction I have had, he is Jerry Seinfeld’s dream come true. For those learning about Fluffy for the first time, there is only a short introduction outlining his biography at the very start of the show. Fluffy is raised by a single mom who runs away from an abusive relationship.
Even on be saw Eddie Murphy: Original King of Comedy and he wished to do it. Shot back in his hometown The Bay Area he had wild success in packing up San Jose HP Pavilion with a great set (poor services aside from absence of fire from Kevin Hart Let Me Explain That).
The Fluffy Movie is a comedy concert that requires no introduction; it is despised by critics and loved by fans. When it comes to its fans, it seems to please Fluffy fans at the showing I attended. However, as an instrument for bringing in new fans, while the stand up comedian will hold your attention, I was not converted.
A true, genuine voice, that of Fluffy, the subtitle of this image and tour states the goal is, ‘to unify through laughter’. Fluffy’s main aim is still to remain in the safest of zones. It has been slapped with a PG-13 rating because of a few rough jokes but otherwise, the content is quite wholesome. He touches on quite a bit, including his family life, weight loss stories and how he compares India to Mexico based on his visits there.
The content is rather nice, working toward an impressive climax, but en-route, it has its share of rough patches. With a time of 101 minutes, it has lots of truth to tell, but maybe far excessive blubber.
Even after watching the filmed prologue set in Tijuana and depicting the circumstances of his birth, the movie in its subsequent parts shocks as it completely disregards the premise, sticking to classic stand up. Even with such a generic title, it’s not an introduction to Fluffy by any means he recalls the idioms used in the previous special. Maybe this was meant for television The Fluffy Movie never really develops enough to warrant anything more than a Comedy Central special.
But his material isn’t provocative; it’s quite the opposite. This is a run of the mill movie. As an immigrant himself, Iglesias uses the advantage of self irony. Rather than dwelling on dividing issues, he focuses on parenting, dieting, and traveling. Issues that many would agree aren’t even all that relatable or funny.
In what could have been a fantastic film, The fluffy Movie, directed by Manny Rodriguez and Jay Lavender only disappoints. There have been behind the scenes documentaries about the development of stand-up comedies, so there are people who Iglesias keeps mentioning, and perhaps the film could have been about the people. Iglesias may be one of the most pleasant comedians in the world, however, this concert, like many others, does not bring anything spectacular.
