Bachelor Party

A 1984 movie that is also known as the Annual Summer Food Fight Movie. For such movies, it does not matter if anyone actually throws mashed potatoes across the room; what matters is whether or not it remains true to the spirit of Blotto Bluto in “National Lampoon’s Animal House” when he yelled “Food fight!” and all hell broke loose.

In this story a guy decides to get married and his buddies decide to throw him a bachelor party. That’s about it. The first half of the flick sets up the bash and the second half of the flick is the bash. Both halves are raunchy, chaotic, and shameless in their appeal to the lowest level of taste.

The lead role is played by Tom Hanks. He was in “Splash” as that guy who fell in love with a mermaid. I didn’t think he was so great in “Splash” I thought he was miscast and they should have gone with somebody less of a conventional leading man but in “Bachelor Party” he’s much funnier and I liked him better here.

He plays a guy who goes over to his fiancée’s house for dinner and drops table scraps on the floor in case they have a dog. He has one great one-liner when he has to introduce himself to her nerdy ex-boyfriend: “The name is Bond. James Bond.” And during the chaos of the party itself, one of his primary roles is simply to direct traffic.

I think what they were trying for at this party was some approximation of one of those Jack Davis drawings in Mad magazine, where there are dozens of people running around like crazy and down in the corners you can see strange little figures doing inexplicable things. Most of their gags depend on public embarrassment, with various twists, and some are pretty funny especially when women decide to retaliate by paying a visit to a male go-go bar.
