Back To School

Rodney Dangerfield has been talking about his loneliness in interviews recently. Why should a man who can fill large concert halls and make millions of dollars a year be forced to go through life without the love of a woman? This is not what you want from a comic. You want them to be zany and crazy, to stand over the problems of commonality and laugh at them.

Yet along with being a comedian, there has always been something else in Dangerfield. He is a man who has failed at everything, even comedy. Rodney Dangerfield is his third name in show business; he flopped under two other names plus his real name. Who really lives inside that red, sweating face and that knowing leer?

The most interesting thing about “Back to School,” which otherwise is an enjoyable but routine comedy, is the riddle of Rodney Dangerfield. Some early talkie comedians come to mind when looking at this man Groucho Marx, W.C. Fields since like them he gives off a certain mystery vibe. It’s never just funny with Marx and Fields; they’re getting revenge for wounds so deep all they can do is laugh about it afterwards which seems similar here with Dangerfield.

He plays Thornton Melon, owner of several Tall & Fat Shops as well as being one among others millionaires who manufacture clothing nationwide. His father was an Italian immigrant without money who let him work in the family business while still young enough not having had any chance for education himself ever before becoming wealthy later on after marrying again only to find herself married again herself though this time round she happens too obnoxious bauble instead so now all he cares about is Jason their college student son.

Dangerfield fondly believes that Jason belongs into some fraternity and represents diving team’s star athlete status but actually it turns out that Jason happens merely to be campus wimp serving as towel boy for swim team therefore gets no respect whatsoever from anyone including his own father until finally prompted by discovery made by danger field concerning truth behind jason’s identity as well as membership status within aforementioned organizations melons decision comes up whereby he chooses enrollment into university whereupon jason becomes aware of these facts necessitating such actions

Naturally there are objections against such plan excepting those raised after danger fields endowment towards establishment called Melon School Of Business Administration has taken place already. Campus characters may be predictable but they are well casted: Sally Kellerman playing sexy English teacher; Paxton Whitehead portraying Anglophile business instructor; Ned Beatty acting venal administrator commonly referred to Dean Martin around here etc., while meanwhile under studied obnoxiousness coupled with loudness exhibited by Danger field takes drinks for everybody approach throwing cash around carelessly hiring expensive coaches meant specifically for helping him pass various subjects taught within aforementioned institution where last mentioned character works periodically Kurt Vonnegut Jr also appears as paid expert concerning his own literary work Besides this fact another important event occurs gradually transforming young jay into big man on campus finally making him achieve something more than just being ordinary towel boy.

This particular storyline could easily fit Marx or fields’ appearances during their lifetime however danger field brings something new along which might seem familiar: certain pathos underneath loud mannerisms displayed by studied obnoxiousness revealed when you get close enough towards its source: real need hidden under façade created due constant exposure towards society filled predominantly with shallowness rather than depth thus indicating lack understanding between people living therein despite outer appearances suggesting otherwise i.e.,

For several years Dangerfield has grappled with finding a style in movies. His previous film, “Easy Money” (1983) was problematic because he wanted to be perceived as a fundamentally good person. However, he is not nice at least, when he does show kindness it is anything but simple. The captivating feat of “Back to School” is that it incorporates such contradictions into the character itself.
