Bad Ass
Considering the fact I have just seen Bad Asses, which is another cheap and action oriented film featuring Danny Trejo alongside Danny Glover, I decided to look into it a bit, knowing that it was indeed a sequel of Bad Ass, which had released in 2012. They have gone so far as to claim Trejo’s Frank Vega is a man on whom the character is based, a man with a beard who used to physically assault a black man in his 50’s when abused by him over a drink on a bus.
When the black guy would not stop, he finished him off with a punch. If you want to see the footage, you can do so on Youtube by clicking here. As for me, I focused not on the movies so do not be mislead by the title calling the black man a young dude, something I believe the creators have attempted for dramatization purposes.
I would never have imagined someone would copy an old guy’s features completely including his fanny pack and t-shirt saying “I am a Mother fucker” on the back. In this case, he also has the mother fucker baseball cap plus a similar beard which goes well to create an action hero image. This may be a good concept for action movies.
Three years ago Frank Vega became famous after a video of him emerges punching a skinhead on a bus went viral. Frank is now operating a boxing gym in which he trains troubled youth, Manny Parkes (Jeremy Ray Valdez) is one of them who is talented and close to Frank. After one of the gym trainings Manny tells Frank he’s going home, as he is on his way home he encounters the people he owes drugs money, thugs.
As Manny dies, Frank finds out that drugs played a part in his death and hence seeks out his old friend Bernice (Danny Glover), who runs a shop adjacent to Frank’s gym, and team up to hunt down the people responsible.
It was a pleasant surprise that all the characters gave solid performances, which I would expect at least a few to be shaky in a Trejo low budget picture, but surprisingly, the director Craig Moss was able to manage the whole production without a hitch. Why this surprised me is after having watched the dag awful and interminable 30 Nights of Paranormal Activity with the Devil Inside the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, which Moss also happened to have written, I was expecting something like that ever again. Bad Asses had just enough fighting, made me laugh in most sequences and was entertaining, which is all one can wish for in a motion picture. B-movie fans will find this film good enough for a quick watch.
The last time I saw so many Danny Trejo movies was about a year ago, and this is highly irregular because the films vary widely in weight classes, so to speak, and I haven’t seen Honorary Wound, so I won’t comment on how it was. Nevertheless, Bad Asses is definitely one of his better efforts. The absurd silliest action movie clichés have their charm, but this particular genre is also funny.
I have a great idea to pair up Trejo with Danny Glover, and I noticed that the duo would reunite in the sequel, probably titled Bad Ass 3, because they have both brilliant ideas. If you know the Lethal Weapon series, and you have to know it unless you just came from a distant planet, then you catch the references, and Glover almost played his role of Detective Roger Murtaugh once again. My only regret is that he was not allowed the privilege to deliver the wonderful phrase, “I’m too old for this shit.”
