Bad Things

A queer reimagining of Stanley Kubrick’s classic “The Shining,” writer/director Stewart Thorndike’s second feature, “Bad Things” tells the story of Ruthie (Gayle Rankin), who inherits a snowy suburban hotel called the Comely Suites from her mother. The relationship between Ruthie and her mother is tense, and so is their connection to the hotel.

When she invites her girlfriend Cal (Hari Nef) along with couple friends Maddie (Rad Pereira) and Fran (Annabelle Dexter-Jones) for a weekend getaway, the power of the hotel becomes stifling in their isolation within it. Bad things happen at Comely Suites among Ruthie’s wobbly disposition, Fran’s neurosis and underlying seeds of doubt, envy and anger between them all, various violent influences take their toll on the friends.

Thorndike’s film wears its inspiration on its sleeve: from snowed-in hotels linked to seemingly inevitable descents into madness to scenes across bar countertops. And “Bad Things” does some reinventing, turning male patriarchal insanity into traumatic female rage and spinning family units into intersections of relationships and friendships. But Thorndike’s high-magnitude, cherished concept just never fulfills its potential.

What should be a grounding center for the film friendship among four central characters whose romantic relationships intersect has nothing but flimsy connections and dead air. There is no chemistry between characters or genuine feeling in performances; their friendship isn’t believable enough to sustain “Bad Things” as anything other than an empty vessel for emotional investment in stakes.

Ruthie’s relationship with her mother plays out over unanswered texts or vague mentions while infidelity tarnishes hers with Cal but every scattered seed of personal history isn’t given support from the script that allows them grow into worthwhile inclusions like this one! Quite simply put: Ruthie is aloof & angry…that’s pretty much it! With a script begging us give in to her plight it makes sense why we can’t help but feel flat towards such an uninteresting character design choice here either way around though really because honestly speaking now again more thoroughly about everything else.

I’ve said previously before hand finally reaching my conclusion statement where I’ll stop talking altogether since there won’t be any point left anymore after that last sentence finishes off my review completely!

The trauma plot which feeds subtext might seem cherry-picked at first glance so pay closer attention next time please people because otherwise you’ll miss out on something great like this movie deserves better than what happened during filming sessions involving directors trying hard but failing miserably due too lackluster writing skills throughout entire production process overall resulting final product being nothing more than mediocre quality entertainment value wise when compared against other films released recently within same genre category type style alike similar themes concepts ideas messages meanings behind words spoken dialogue exchanged between characters played roles portrayed acted out loud audibly voiced verbally communicated conveyed expressed through speech sounds made aloud by mouths opening closing moving around slightly different ways each time depending upon context surrounding situation happening right now here today together forever always until death do us part maybe even longer if reincarnation exists somewhere else outside our universe beyond dimensions accessible only through higher planes existence levels consciousness awareness states mind comprehension understanding realization knowledge enlightenment illumination insight wisdom intelligence brilliance genius creativity originality inventiveness inventiveness innovation novelty newness freshness uniqueness singularity exclusivity distinctiveness apartness divergence divergence distinction differentialization variation diversification alternation modification transformation transfiguration transmutation changeover shift interchange swap replacement substitution conversion translocation relocation movement move-men.
