Bajatey Raho

The first twenty minutes or so of Bajatey Raho feel a bit like a roller coaster in terms of how it sets up expectations. A man (Tusshar Kapoor) pleading with a school’s headmaster to let his younger, video-game obsessed relative (Hussan Saad) into the school is revealed to be delightfully a wild blackmail scheme against the headmaster by the guy and kid, which then turns into a car chase with the gun-wielding headmaster. Then what’s really going on becomes clear: the headmaster isn’t even the target at all, it’s crooked industrialist Sabbarwahl (Ravi Kishan).

A tight-knit family and couple friends are out for revenge against their patriarch a kindhearted honest soul who started a bank for poor and working class people in their Delhi neighborhood only to have it swindled by an industrialist who left over 1 billion rupees worth of furious community debt upon his death. The shock kills him, leaving his loved ones to figure out how to get back that money before they lose their house. So they decide since Sabbarwahl stole it from them they are going to steal it back.

Bajatey Raho is an energetic, irrepressibly good-natured caper comedy that also happens to be short at under an hour and fifty minutes long. It cuts corners elides some details (a lot of character relationships are a little unclear and certain particulars about the long con run on Sabbarwahl don’t hold up under scrutiny) but manages through most such omissions with bonhomie and charm.

One obstacle it can’t quite get past is its integration of love interest . Although Manpreet (Vishakha Singh) goes on to become much more than “the love interest” in terms of importance within greater plot she does not get handled very well as such here. She’s introduced as random pretty girl Sukhwinder encounters in daily business as cable TV installer, with whom he subsequently has tuneful slickly shot montage dates.

Suddenly though she gets revealed as choreographer substituting for friend supposed arrange production number at Sabbarwah’s daughter wedding. The scheme that takes down Sabbarwalh hinges crucially on this wedding appears nearly seamless except for anything involving Manpreet classic con/heist movie style otherwise but every one her contributions greater scheme although successful seems completely by chance; ultimately reusable deus ex-machine whose presence doesn’t sink movie any means but does account vast majority business related character logical loose ends.

To Shashant Shah logical loose ends aren’t necessarily high priority items fix though; having previously directed features Dasvidaniya Chalo Dilli all share Bajatey Raho basis operate more emotion than logic among other things those two did also include pleasantness actor Vinay Pathak facilitates master disguise assists scheme effective until disappearing almost entirely climax where by point too many different plots must resolve fall few wayside most come satisfactorily cathartic fruition.

Honestly, “Bajatey Raho” is not so bad and it can be entertaining if you don’t think about it too much. The songs are good, the actors seem to enjoy their roles and there are quite a few genuinely funny moments. However, it doesn’t hold up very well when you start to pick at it like a thread in a sweater. This isn’t usually a great idea for comedies because the priority should always be making people laugh. Still, “Bajatey Raho” does this without being cruel which has got to count for something just nothing deep or significant but still something.
