Be My Guest, Be My Baby
“Be My Guest, Be My Baby” is an innovative movie that breaks stereotypes and brings to light the story of Filipino women working as bar hostesses in Japan. Directed by Mitsuhito Shiraha, the film is based on true accounts that were first researched by sociologist Koushou Nakashima. The film explores an area of Japanese society which often goes unnoticed.
The plot revolves around Shota who is a graduate student investigating the exploitation of Filipino hostesses. During his research he meets Mika, one such woman working at these bars who proves to be strong-willed and resolute in character. As Shota ventures further into Mika’s life he uncovers some disturbing truths about her situation including being trapped in a yakuza orchestrated sham marriage under constant surveillance with meagre wages.
Mika’s character does not conform to stereotypes but instead defies them; she is no helpless victim but rather someone who bravely faces difficult circumstances head-on. As for relationships between people like her and men such as Shota this challenges the idea of powerlessness among Filipina entertainers living abroad.
