Book Club

Flushed-Away

It seems that the trend nowadays is to target adult males and females when making any movie. Be it an action film of Red or drama teen/children trends like I’ll See You in My Dreams, or even a romantic comedy The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, they all seem to have an adult liking and I am for one enthralled with it. Given the fact that a majority of cinemas do offer senior citizens discounts, attending cinemas for retired people has become the norm for me. Quite a few I’ve gotten acquainted with recognize me and wave to me.

In any case, a love story that combines humor with laughter comes in with these ladies rolling up in the vehicle that is Book Club, and as for myself going into board seldom did I consider leaving this room entertained. Let’s put it this way, I am not too inclined to argue when someone says that romantic comedies are by far the most loved and appealing movie genres that exist. Not editing out a Hallmark podcast without loving the rom-coms! LOL, One more game that hits close to home is the duo of Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, and Mary Stenburgen Stenburgen women who they claim to be the funniest of the younger generation of Hollywood. The icing on the cake is the fact that I am also a hardcore book club lover. Pretty much all of the adult part of my life is the adult part of my life being a member of a book club. It is the perfect way to satisfy the need to socialize once a month and the pleasure of engaging in discussions and arguments. Yes, this month’s book club meeting is on Thursday and I have been looking forward to this invite ever since while the book itself was slightly less thrilling.

So, bearing in mind all that I was prepared to enjoy this film, and guess what? It’s not as severe as that, cycle-wise, it Never Is and I found the 4 women wiser than the best. Gets You To Laugh Out Loud On Almost Every Scene I was also influenced by the chemistry the four women shared. All of them appeared to me as actual friends and mothers enjoying and being snappy at each other.

Some Johnson and other critics may not enjoy seeing the novel 50 Shades of Grey and all its frank discussions of sexuality in their movies or television shows, but for me, it was humorous and surprisingly liberating. A particular scene stood out to me when Dorothy from The Golden Girls said, ‘Why can’t mature women express their needs and wants’; that alone reassures me as a woman. This development is laudable for numerous reasons.

Movies about them are Carnegie Hall and Away We Go Relationships. Many of those local relationship comedies resemble graphic lovemaking in 50 Shades of Grey, which is merely a prologue to what else happens in the film. Diane Keaton is a newly married widow forced to deal with children who think she is an old lady. Candice Bergen is a district judge who has decided to try the online relationship once. The feminist Jane Fonda is an ex-buncher, a lady who wants a man but not a husband. Mary Steenburgen tries to cope with the empty relationship she has been suffering since her husband retired.

All the men they brought in to accompany the ladies are great. All the guys had their charm but I think I’m developing a soft spot for Craig T Nelson. He was so charming!

Book Club is far from perfect and I wouldn’t be surprised if critics give it a very hard time and disassemble it, but I have to admit I had fun. The plot is predictable, the green screen effects are sometimes silly and the overall movie feels silly. The references to 50 Shades of Grey had a time and place but were funnier a few years ago when the trend was still alive. The movie honestly feels a bit out of time considering it seems the trend has more or less died out with the movies done.

But none of that mattered to me. Book Club was fun to watch. It has a statistical rating of PG-13, but due to sensual content, it is not for everyone so check out other resources of the movie.
