Civil War Saint (2022)

Civil-War-Saint

The narrative revolves around a war hero, Jonathan, who is rescued by a neighboring dog after getting lost in the woods. While out hunting, Jonathan gets wounded and is saved by a pet from a nearby house. He is tended to by a woman, and in return for her assistance, he adopts the dog to help him navigate his way back home. Jonathan runs into a girl who has run away and a woman who is living on the street, and together, as they try to find their way back home, they discover community, love, and most importantly, Jesus.

The film ‘Civil War Saint’, which is an American based drama, tackles topics such as patriotism and national love in a wholesome manner. From a Christian perspective, the American themed songs used will get more Christian audiences, as it also contains family values. The film demonstrates and teaches elements such as forgiveness, courage, and truthfulness, and for example, when Jonathan sought forgiveness these values were displayed.

A love for Jesus and a fondness for one’s country are powerful virtues that are deeply embedded within the film’s plot. This is a piece of art that Christians who lean towards more historical pieces with pro-military tend will certainly appreciate. Many films shun the idea of revenge, rebellion, and greed because of the negativity it brings, however, these anti heroes do suffer the after effects of their actions.

The film’s biggest flaw is in its acting. Within a single family, more than half the cast members were chosen. Much of the acting and dialogue feels unnatural, and at times, some of the conversations seem a bit out of place compared to the plot. Some of the dialogue and events can be puzzling for the viewers too. Although there are light profanities, and the film does show some violent imagery like gunfire and blood, it doesn’t go overboard. The movie showcases themes such as revenge and problematic family dynamics. None of this, in my opinion, goes beyond what is acceptable for children and is appropriate for even young kids.

While enjoying this with his children, a parent might consider these questions or even pose these questions to his children:

In what ways can I help my children understand the fundamental historical context of my country (eg. its Constitution and the rights they should enjoy as citizens)?

Civil War Saint is an entertaining family movie that children of older age alongside parents would want to engage in. It is equally good as an informative movie for families that homeschool. Having said these, some parents might have concerns over this film’s level of suitability for the very young due to its violent nature. For these reasons above, Dove’s rating for Civil War Saint is aged twelve and above.
