Colombiana

Flushed-Away

In the F.B.I. agent pursuing an unyielding assassin of ‘Colombiana’, threads “Woman. Even if there is one man, David nutcases himself. We abort the search.” He said snarling at the killer. He was expecting more action from the F.B.I. agents in the movie.

I guess he hasn’t seen enough of Luc Besson’s movies. Revenge drama meets hunky gigolo in this case, yet The Woman in the Flesh was directed by Olivier Megaton, who in any case will be better known as a great action director, it is a better name than May Gah’s tone. However, the colonizing actor, who will also appear in the movie, claims to shame Mr. Besson, a writer, and producer of the movie who has spent years honing and developing the lethal woman in her underwear genre to which “Columbiana” is described by him as.

Previous actresses that Mr. Besson appeared with included Anne Parillaud (in the premiere of ‘Femme Nikita’), a teenage Natalie Portman in ‘Professional’, and lady Milla Jovovich in ‘The Fifth Element with orange hair. However, the new love of his life is Zoe Saldana, the blue-skinned heroine of ‘The Avatar movie, who also seems to be able to master, among other vital skills, the use of large guns in little clothing, (well, perhaps not as well as Ms. Jovovich, but then she appears to have been specially bred for this type of work).

What is not requisite is the performance of authenticity, for an actress’s best hope is to be appealing and to preserve her integrity and sense of humor should the director and screenwriter be prepared to work hand in hand. Ms. Saldana has to go a long way in that respect, for she is depicting a woman with some almost supernatural abilities and everything from a big-time assassin to a strong inclination towards parkour, with the general goal of avenging her parents whom she believes to have been Colombian drug lords killers.

Needless to say, “Colombiana” is not satisfied just being an adaptation of a comic book and is indicative of how classier revenge flicks such as Tony Scott’s `Man on Fire’ look. It also has pretensions, period: Mr. Megaton dedicates some pages to tempos of Francis Ford Coppola (Ms. Saldana dressing down the pool like Martin Sheen in Apocalypse Now) and Brian De Palma the last scene at a drug lord’s hideout is anti-globalist “scarface”. Most importantly, the result is estranging: There are some scenes in the beginning that are comical and do have you amused with the story, but in the end, the dichotomous moods and absurdity only make you laugh.

The second task Ms. Saldana has is made easier by a doe-eyed 13-year-old Amandla Stenberg who stars as Cataleya Restrepo and RT throughout the patriarchal smearing, almost at the start of the movie. The future killer who is sensitive is more than ideal in how she depicts the character with her trembling emotional stance and active screen presence with an outburst of dry comical quips. Mrs. Saldana’s sexy and professional portrayal aside, she is left with the prospect of trying to match this scene throughout the rest of the movie.

Colombiana is rated PG-13 (Filipino parents are strongly cautioned). Guns, demolitions, torture, sharks but mostly she does quite several people over with missiles.
