My blog would be easier to read if the films were rated poorly, so I chose a film simply for its low rating. Death Passage is set in Australia in a place known as the Lemon Tree Passage, where there is a legend that if one speeds through the area they will spot a ghost. Admittedly, this legend can be grouped together with Bushtucker Man’s colorful folklore that includes huffing cat poop to gain foresight, which I myself have not heard before. Guessing which one is true might prove to be a challenge.
There are some intriguing starting thoughts for our movie. First, it appears the aim of the ghost is to compel individuals to commit suicide which might mean this film is some kind of meta social experiment targeted at achieving the same aim to the viewers. Secondly, it can be said with certainty that after watching this picture, you will greatly admire good directing and cinematography. There’s haphazard composition for almost all the shots. In some shots the heads of the characters are missing, whilst in other there are only their midsections. The entire movie has a strange fog surrounding it (perhaps there is the possibility that someone tried to destroy the original).
This text follows a group of stupid teenagers on holiday who learn about an internet video called the Lemon Passage whilst on vacation. The goal is to drive really fast and turn left where you might see a ghost and they do see a ghost, but are met with even more sinister happenings. It is bloody awful!
To say that this movie is terrible is an understatement; it could have been amusing at the least. At least it is better than the classic “haunted house” hollywood narrative. The film suffers most from bland and extremely poor character development paired with incompetent direction. Comparing them to the two girls, the boys are terrible.
You might find yourself asking “are the actors bad?” Well, I’m not so sure. If their goal in the movie was to portray the most obnoxious annoying human beings then they did a great job. I would rather shut a door on my face than subject myself to this movie ever again.
The story attempts to get a bit deeper than the previous acts, but the times are all out of place and there isn’t enough substance for us to really be too invested. People wanting some cheap jump scares are about the only audience possible for this, and there are a lot better options for that out there. Another option to get some enjoyment out of this film would be to watch it with some friends. If you are the sort of individual who sits in a group and makes fun of bad movies in the style of Mystery Science Theater, this one is primed and ready for the picking.
The unusual side of this film is that it does try, but it is bad to a degree, however, there is some amount of attention to the script. It is kind of difficult to elaborate on this, but it appears as though this is some type of passion project that lacked a definitive vision. Maybe this is a familiar tale down under and it could help if you have some sort of background and the movie tries to build a deeper context in the last chapter, but it fails miserably.
