Fatal Instinct
Spoof movies are great, kind of. It has been said that every time a particular genre becomes popular, a parody is sure to emerge soon thereafter. Respected critics say that it is a chance for the creators to promo as well as to have fun. Recently, we have seen parody films like the scary movie films for the horror genre, but I believe the first spoof films that I watched were the Airplane films.
Certainly, there are other films like Naked Gun films as well as National Lampoon’S Loaded Weapon which made fun of the cop movie. We should also not forget about great Mel Brooks who made the amazing Blazing Saddles, the decent, Spaceballs or the ‘never heard about it’ Robin Hood: Men In Tights. No one will ever forget about how skilfully Hot Shots films parodied Top Gun.
Spoofs have no logic, they are animated films for adults which are made to make you laugh. All you need is mouth gags, gags, slapstick and dumb gags. Going through history of Michael Douglas, he seemed to feel like his life was in crisis during 80s and early 90s, hence transforming popular cinema and creating erotic thriller sub genre of Disclosure, Basic Instinct, or Fatal Attraction. Hollywood rules in such a case are clear: in every action there are consequences; thus the parody in this case was provided by Fatal Instrument.
Ned Ravine is a defense attorney who plays as a policeman and, incidentally, he also defends the people he arrests. His mistress is having an affair with the car services and together they wish to cash a fortune from his life insurance. His assistant has a strange history and compulsive disorder, the only case he lost, Max Shady, is coming from jail seeking revenge and the only case he ever lost sits in jail seeking revenge. Into this web of deception and conspiracy marches Lola Cain, a seductress who will hop into bed with Ned and have him all night long and soon afterward, Ned will sorely regret it.
If you have watched any of the spoof films ever in your lifetime, you know what to expect when watching the film Fatal Instinct. Various acts of stupidity and pure nonsensical behaviour ensues as the actors go about parodying almost all of Michael Douglas’ movies. Some of the jokes will have you laugh out loud, others won’t work but the majority of jokes should keep you laughing throughout the film.
The cast is wonderful especially Armand Assante’s stellar performance as Ned Ravine (he is the “send in the clones” guy from Judge Dredd). He appears natural as a dull witted lawyer/cop who gets sucked into this steamy plot. Sean Young is lovely as Lola Cain and does not hesitate to be outrageous. Others able to offer support include Sherilyn Fenn, Kate Nelligan, James Remar and Tony Randall.
Fatal Instinct is rarely worth one’s intellectual argument, however, for viewing it just for the sake of flashing a smile for ninety minutes duration, it certainly works. It also has the most improbable sexual act ever since Jeremy Irons and Juliette Binoche twirled in each other as dying trout in Damage. If you can accommodate some stupidity in your life then you cannot get a worse movie then Fatal Instinct. I can’t wait for National Lampoon’s Lord of the Rings.
