For The Love of George
In 2018, an incredibly funny comedy film titled For The Love Of George was released and has since achieved great success. It is about a woman named Poppy who abandons her husband after he cheats on her. Having fallen for the media’s portrayal of George Clooney, she makes it her mission to meet him. Somewhere along the line, viewers find themselves falling in love with George too.
Now fans can learn about the inspiration behind and creation of this movie from the filmmaker herself and other crew members.
The Creator
Nadia Jordan is a British filmmaker and actress now based in America, where she has built an impressive career but she is also the brains behind this fantastic story. After attending London School of Film & Television, Nadia worked for such renowned companies as BBC, Channel 4, Endemol and Sky. Since then she has won countless awards many thanks to For The Love Of George!
Similarities With The Character
It’s true that Nadia Jordan drew largely on personal experiences from her youth when forming parts of this character’s personality and dreams; however, as she put it: “I did move to the States following the break-up of a relationship although not to look for George!” She went on say that “several events that take place in the film happened to me for example, I visited a psychic in Beverly Hills and it turned out that she had read for two of George Clooney’s ex-girlfriends!”
The Inspiration
Filmmaker/star Nadia Jordan shared how this comedy came about with audiences everywhere: She read Not On Our Watch by John Prendergast and Don Cheadle which led her into researching some humanitarian work done by none other than Mr. George Clooney himself an aspect which deeply touched her heart while inspiring laughter at same time therefore making both aspects come together perfectly through cinema!
The Female Lead
Discussing what drove her when writing/performance of female lead poppy; there was one thing wanted more than anything else -to ensure the woman’s love affair with George Clooney didn’t become only thing about her character. “In writing Poppy’s story, it was really important to me to keep her relatable and somewhat grounded,” said Jordan. “Her romantic fantasy about George was a way of escaping a life she was not fully living and ultimately I wanted her to find her own voice and stand on her own two feet. I did not want to follow along the lines of the all too predictable happy ending.”
George’s Engagement
It took several years for Nadia to finish writing For The Love Of George because she had such a clear idea in mind. She revealed that after moving from London to Los Angeles back then, George Clooney happened be known as “one the most eligible bachelors in Hollywood” so this is what provided basis for scriptwriting.
However, once she was pretty far along in the script, George Clooney announced his engagement and nearly killed it. But Nadia is a really good writer, so she reworked it and made the movie happen.
Money
For The Love Of George faced financial trouble like most independent films do when it comes to making them. When looking for partnerships, a financer told Nadia Jordan that she had to change the ending of the movie if she wanted him to help her which she refused to do.
Among other things, this is what made her want to not only star in it but produce it as well. She did everything how she wanted to despite all of the struggles.
Picking A Director
Since the story of For The Love Of George revolved around a woman who was running away from a life that was making her unhappy while trying to find herself and maybe love along the way it was important for Nadia to have a female director. Her first director quit unexpectedly, but after some time, Maria Burton came on board.
“It was really important to me working with as many women as possible and we did have a predominantly female crew. This was a female-driven story with a female protagonist and a female writer/producer so it made sense to have a female director, DP [director of photography], editor and as many more females on set as we could!”
Festivals It Played At.
Before its mainstream release, For The Love Of George showed at several festivals and did very well. In 2017 alone, it was part of the Official Selection at the Chicago Comedy Film Festival (where it won both Audience Choice Award and Top Female Filmmaker Award), at the La Femme International Film Festival, and at Orlando Film Festival.
The following year it became an Official Selection of Saint Paul Frozen Film Festival, where it won Best Comedy Feature Award.
The Cause
For The Love Of George tells an important story besides being romantic and funny. Based on a book about the history of Sudan, the Darfur crisis, and George Clooney’s humanitarian work it’s clear that this filmmaker has her ear to the ground when it comes to social issues.
So it only makes sense that she would give some of the profits from the movie to charity, and the organization is the Enough Project, which is Not On Our Watch (George Clooney’s foundation)’s main partner.
Chicago Comedy Film Festival
One of the many festivals For The Love Of George played at was in Chicago called Chicago Comedy Film Festival. The creator of the festival Jessica Hardy talked about why this movie won two awards and so did Nadia Jordan.
“Because comedy in the past has been dominated by masculine voices. We’ve made it part of our objective to accept a fair amount of female producers, writers, and directors,” she said. It’s nice to see women supporting each other and recognizing each other’s talent.
