Spy Intervention

Spy Intervention

It has been their grievance for a long time that all the big prizes tend to go to sad dramas while comedians, especially farceurs, possess greater difficulty mastering their craft. Spy Intervention fully embodies this truism. The comedy seems to be designed as a light-hearted parody of both spy movies and marital romance but with none of the gadgets, derring-do, warmth or sex appeal one would expect.

Usually, considering that Drew Mylrea’s ‘How to Deter a Robber’ was his debut feature and was made on a tight budget, I would have cut him some slack. However, since the writers Mark Famiglietti and Lane Garrison preserved only the misogynic elements in their piece, it would be unwise to extend any allowances when discussing the end product.

Corey Gage, the international man of mystery is sexy blond Drew Van Acker who is a spokesperson for tuxedos. After literally bumping into cosmetics shop assistant Pam Grayson, who was played by Poppy Delevingne (sister to Cara, who is more famous), Corey is soon infatuated and self-centered. Soon he fl004ks his way out of a double date in Kathmandu with his work colleague Smuts to court Pam.

After getting married, owning a house in a civilized neighborhood and switching jobs to sell cardboard boxes, a family with children seems inevitable. However, Smuts, the stereotypical disruptive friend, decides that his close mate has been too tame for too long and gets him involved in a stakeout instead, as well as the final act where all the characters shove into the kitchen to have a dinner party.

One of the true highlights of the film occurs during the DIY-store sequence, where Pam and Corey bicker about the purchase of stainless-steel versus brushed-nickel vanity fixtures, while Brittany Furlan appears hilariously as Pam’s overly made-up secretary assistant Brianna. But these bright spots are just phosphorescent sparks in the almost infinitely deep swamp that is the radius of this entire lengthy toil.
