Submerged

The trailer of Submerged didn’t really impress me; however, the movie had two other things which caught my attention and made me consider watching it. First was the director (Steven C. Miller) who directed an amazing action thriller film called The Aggression Scale and second was that it was a containment thriller a subgenre I always find myself attracted to for some reason. It is not entirely disappointing but still perfect VOD fodder; entertaining enough but without real tension or any lasting power.

The story revolves around a group of friends on a night out in town driven around by a fancy custom made limo designed by Mario van Peebles but when a kidnapping attempt goes wrong everyone ends up at the bottom of canal trapped in car rapidly becoming their tomb.

Present where everyone is trapped and past showing us what led up to this limo tomb are interchanged cleverly by Miller but these transitions become padding after simple premise balloons plot into something too convoluted for its own good.

Wings star Tim Daly plays father of one of the kids and owner of the limo who after sacking lot workers fears that threats on his life may eventually be aimed at daughter hires Matt (Jonathan Bennett) long time employee/bodyguard along with tricked out limo to assist him protect her.

Submerged is basically an interesting concept for movie at its core a bunch of people have to work together to find way out from bottom sea level canal trapped inside limousine before tide takes them far away into ocean or wherever (assuming such thing can happen).

Unfortunately though this eventually becomes so weighed down by plot that actual escaping from limousine winds up playing second fiddle towards flashbacks which do solid job establishing characters but ultimately results with disconnect from finding what everybody wants how will these individuals act here? In end all said & done aspect only occupies small space within narrative feels much ado about nothing when credits roll.

Still Steven C. Miller’s directing remains spot on and I’ll be eagerly waiting for his next ventures but Submerged is far too sincere at a time when neither screenplay nor performers can ever make it into something believable.
