The Fast and The Fierce
What is going on? A racing flick from the Asylum? Was indeed the release of Fast and Fierce: Death Race meant to be released in the same vicinity as this new Fast and Furious movie? Fortunately for The Asylum they do not have to worry about the global pandemic closing cinema windows and have the opportunity to rush their release and get to the market before the actual incomparable blockbuster comes out! But will it turn out to be a risk worth taking? Can a mock-buster exist independently free from any Hollywood movie that it can use as a crutch? Apparently yes! Anyway, you could easily get support which takes second to go wrong when you only need some title which is not novel at all to the shopper who wants to put it in the basket at their local convenience!
In addition, it seems The Asylum have also adopted the practice of Fast & Furious franchise to simplify the titles. THE Fast and THE Fierce was in 2017 so the current one is simply Fast and Fierce even though both films are completely UNRELATED.
As if confusing people wasn’t enough, The Asylum are also quite literally confusing their own fans here! Why is it that this is not a part two to the film made in 2017? Already are we in the realm of the first fast furious where the title is the only thing that links this film to the rest? It clearly appears to be the last. Because whereas the 2017 film was inspired by Speed, Fast and Fierce: Death Race is closer to the movie Need For Speed in 2014 (and there is ZERO connection, either in theme or any other way to the Death Race franchise).
This film revolves around Jack Tyson (Michael DeVorzon), a mechanic based in Mexico, who participates in an illegal car race from Mexico to California in order to settle his little brothers debts. During the race, a woman who is being beaten by her gangster boyfriend who is sponsoring the tournament, played by DMX, rushes into his car asking for assistance carrying a USB drive which has a lot of incriminating evidence against her thug boyfriend who is a potential future prisoner along with many others.
Let us tackle the first issue straight away. Surprisingly, the film Fast And Fierce: Death Race
has none of the features for which The Asylum is known for – the bad CGI animation. Actually, if there is CGI here, it is hardly noticeable. Instead, we have another package of actual street-racing films, which is as real as it can be, and is what we have in the first Fast and Furious film.
And then there’s the plot interest where Pulp Fiction’s DMX’s gangster Davie is in charge of his own team “cops” who kidnap him and his second in command, Gillian (Veronika Issa), attempts to b) gather an ideal rescue crew to rescue her superior who is Davie And c) to stop Jack at any price. In other words, don’t expect DMX to do a star role. Instead, the audience is in for something surprising a cameo role from DMX!
Directed by Asylum regular Jared Cohn, and co-written by Mark Atkins and Marc Gottlieb who penned the excellent Planet of the Sharks, Fast and Fierce: Death Race is one of the few The Asylum films that can boast about its plot, skilled characters and excellent storytelling.
The typical elements expected, one might say, of a film from The Asylum’s ghoulish line of work (which includes DMX headlining because he is a known name) can be easily been seen in their other works around, and the film can be marketed only in vain. However, she managed to work on this in a somewhat original fashion from the Asylum could ever allow it to stand this is pretty much by head and shoulders above general rubbish where the plot itself has ripped off Fast & Furious!
