The Gaelic King

The Gaelic King

Shooting on a shoe-string budget, this adventure film has numerous chances of coming out bah very good or bad vet. It will either be simply stupidity absurd or it will be fun watching. This one however does not look like it will be making the cut. If it is not a movie you have to watch, don’t worry, it will not be annoying or intolerable at the very least. Don’t expect much from this movie, it has a low budget and that’s it. Would be nice if you just put the peg there.

The positive thing about the movie is that it is aware of its own deficits. It never desires to be above and beyond its constraints. So don’t hope to see magnificent battle sequences that have lots of extras and set pieces. It’s a piece of struggle and fast paced with lots of fights all through.

The pacing is specifically what makes this film so enjoyable to watch. It guarantees that there is consistent action throughout the whole film, and therefore, there is virtually no dull or sluggish moment in it. It even quite helps you not to even notice that there is not much a story really, and that the film itself is not really doing anything all that captivating to gaze at.

And in fact, the film is as dull and as simple as it can be. That is pretty much what one would expect from a movie of this kind, but in this case at any rate, it does turn out nicely. That pace of such unpredictable events as the one that is apparent would of course help advance the pace of this movie pretty well, though in fact it has a myriad of events that take place. It does make some odd choices toward the end in relation to its own plot, but I for one was somewhat able to excuse the film for that. I still had a lot of enjoyment in watching this film.

Surprisingly, the movie is quite well made and contains some nice shots and scenes throughout. It photoshops different places where the background seems economical. The movie sometimes gives off the impression of being filmed in reenactment villages with peasants who have a passion for medieval costumes, which I wouldn’t be shocked if this is how it was filmed. I wouldn’t say it is a negative, but it does kind of make the movie feel a little cheap, and at times, a little fake as well.

Overall not that good of a film, however, within the confinements of its genre and considering the constraints it has it’s a very entertaining little film, and above all else, it is captivating.
