The Land That Time Forgot

It’s been quite a while but I still remember attending the debut of Warlords Of Atlantis at a local cinema alongside a big screen bonus. Unfortunately, I cannot recall the bonus production. Perhaps a snippet of that TV series’ Spider-Man with Nicholas Hammond in the lead (Are the DVDs out yet?) But the experience was overwhelming, for so much was packed into the movie. Several years later I stumbled on the other so-called Kevin Connor-Doug McClure ‘masterpieces’ likely near the Christmas holidays and instantly fell in love with them. Some 30 years down the line, I can proudly say that I have all of them stored in my DVDs and I was ecstatic when I found out that The Land That Time Forgot was being re-shot.

A yacht is situated off the American coast and on board are two pairs and a grumpy old sea captain and his deputy (there is a specific mention of Key West in Florida). Boris tries to figure out where they’ve anchored only to be frustrated storms abound and then out of the blue comes a glowing sphere over the ocean. And then the next thing they realize, the storm seems to have died down but they are very lost.

The boat is moored and they disembark leaving the head of the trip the wife of Frost who foolishly remains on the boat. To the scene much like a piece of heaven, much like in the original, comes the residents, who should hardly be here at that time. Due to some unfortunate events, the captain’s first climbing of the gates of dread is almost immediate and finds himself in the belly of one of the unfortunate miniature beast.
The party then understand that their surrounding did not a tropical island.

Not having studied the creator of Tarzan, Edgar Rice Burroughs, I am unable to relate this new contemporary adaptation to its real novel. Nevertheless, there are some distinct features between that history and the modern one including submersible Germans in a submarine.

So, Frost look up C. Thomas Howell, who is performing the role as well as directing. We have Cole who happens to be a best friend in the film, played by a writer of the movie, Darren Dalton so the team of The Day The Earth Stopped is back for more sci fi fun. Do they? Actually, yes they do remarkable work thanks to their budget and the fact they owe respect to an everlasting example.

To put it mildly, let me get straight to the point. The Land That Time Forgot may be well below Jurassic Park in terms of budget but has some great breathtaking (though quite overused) locations, good and bad CGI effects and The Asylum’s ongoing ability to cast beautiful albeit unknown actresses in the leading roles. Lindsey McKeon was the main female lead this time and Supernatural fans may remember her as the reaper in the great Death Takes A Holiday episode. She was joined by Anya Benton, a Russian actress, portraying Howell’s spouse. Timothy Bottoms, a seasoned actor, also makes an appearance as the grumpy old captain.

CGI T-Rex from The Asylum’s earlier projects makes an appearance again and threatens the shipwrecked crew once again, and while it looks great in some parts and terrible in others, it still seamlessly fits. Some nice touch with the digital matte surrounding the submarine, and given the locations and the pretty good acting all around, one would think nah scratch that, it looks more expensive than what it really cost. Director Howell is worth commending because he has stuck with The Asylum and grown better with every movie he has made for them.

On the disc there are several other trailers like the Transmorphers: Fall Of Man, a making of documentary and some outtakes as well. There is also a 2.0 and 5.1 sound option as well to suit your audio configuration.

Land That Time Forgot is a good old fashioned cheese fest and although there are a few rather bloody bits, children can watch it as well. It concludes with the prospect of a sequel to follow and considering that Doug McClure returned for The People That Time Forgot, why can’t C. Thomas Howell as well?
