The Last Warrior (Skif)
Marten (Aleksandr Kuznetsov) is the last of a once-fierce race that spawned throughout Asia, a race which now survives in humiliated conditions despite their unparalleled skill and numbers which are now sorely thinned. This does not prevent him from coming to the conclusion that many people are hired to accompany the mercenaries, which comes from tribal men who are currently occupying another tribe.
Lyutobor (Aleksey Faddeev) has just welcomed himself a newborn child a baby boy and should take more time to enjoy his wife Tatyana (Izmaylova Vasilisa) but this particular wife of his is going to face troubles from the issues residing in her husband’s people.
The result was that the whole action phenomena became monotonous from early on which can be blamed on even if only in part the attempts that the director Rustam Mosafir made to put some spin on those overused setpieces which were however of such a nature as to be laudable in how they were executed, even if it was little.
In the other hand, it was not all that George R.R. Martin court drama as the entire things seemed to have been shot either on some frozen plains in russia or in some equally frozen woods, all to reinforce the dominant nature of the characters and those who were working on the first place the project. The only female character that was deemed of any importance was Tatyana, and even then, she was only included for the purpose of being kidnapped and later rescued by her husband.
Every so often amidst this muck there would be something to make one think, alright, this definitely is an interesting addition, but two of these were additions from different movies. At one point, having joined forces with Marten to help him in getting his kidnapped wife and child back, our hero seems to unleash some sort of power that allows him to become a version of the fantasy comic character Wolverine, minus the claws, and goes into Logan all out berserk rage and even guts a bad guy or two.
This was following Marten’s endurance in a battle which was similar to the Mad Max Beyond Thunder dome which had him tied with the blunt force and elastic rope to his body with a collar headband. Amongst this tribe there was even a dwarf who was paraded by a stupid muscular man as their tribes leader.
In conclusion, “derivative” would be the best word to describe The Last Warrior, and if you had enjoyed the works that inspired it, you may be less than generous to this, essentially a collage of possibilities of Russian rip-off that for some reason end devoured to stand out from the crowd.
This suggested the cinema from this part of the world in this era was seeking to copy hits from else where, much as the Italians to Bollywood had a habit of doing, both historically and contemporaneously whatever, it was a well known fact that not that many moons ago a movie like Night Watch which had been identifiably, eccentrically, wildly Russian and did not feel the need to please those who appreciated the 1 we saw in the flick.
This was more like covering a bar fight in a countryside Russian bar, then showing it 1.5 hours with different cuts this can be boring, unless one was very interested in the country’s entertainment.
