The Other Woman
I guess there was a possibility, even if slim, that “The Other Woman” would stand out as a funny and feisty revenge film targeting women. The idea, which I must say is really lame and cliché, could be interesting in the right hands. Certainly not in this film where, let me tell you, no smart or creative hands got anywhere near it. “The Other Woman” cannot be anything but the most mediocre or careless depiction of comedy across shakespeare.com forums.
While it is insulting to all intelligent women around, it is insulting to half decent movie goers as well.
I have no idea what screenwriter Melissa Stack wanted to accomplish, but she completely failed. The film is far from being amusing. There is no new element in the jokes attempted. The characters are irritating, one-dimensional and stupid. I did not like any character in this film nor did I sympathize with their predicaments. Essentially the film completely destroys any chances it had of promoting women’s empowerment Andy women’s independence.
Cameron Diaz’s with her usual silliness plays a New York lawyer Carly who likes a handsome and smooth Mark played by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. Things seem rosy for them until she learns that Kate played by Leslie Mann is in fact his wife, which is quite unsettling.
These two odd people turn out to be friends. Their friendship only deepens when they learn that Mark is seeing Amber, a dimwitted supermodel played by Kate Upton, as well. The three are cheated on by the same man and they join forces to take revenge against the two-timer Mark (or is it a three-timer)?
Nick Cassavetes and his film Stark serve for us an irritating and horrid piece of cinema. It does not have a single inventive idea or a scrap of originality. It looks like a copy of other movies.
This film is so shoddily constructed from the inane shit jokes to its careless inclusion of the song “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” by Cyndi Lauper. The acting also does not assist. In fact, the collection of bad acting that is offered by Cameron Diaz has been the norm and still is the case here. Probably the most grating is Mann, well that is quite some compliment. And Upton, now she is not an actress and she does not hide that fact.
I once read that “The Other Woman” grossed $200 million, worldwide. I can’t really explain how this is possible, it is terrible. Remember how often we watch an entertaining commercial movie that does not offend our intelligence, even if it is completely regrettable?
There was no point in “The Other Woman,” and yet, it earned a ton. How about a good comedy where a woman is strong and arrogant at the expense of a filthy and pathetic male character? A person would assume that it is “The Other Woman”. Certainly, it is not.
