The Wolf Pack (Meteler)

The Wolf Pack (Meteler)

At first glance, the plot of The Wolfpack appears rather grim: a girl and six boys were imprisoned in an apartment for fourteen years. These are the Angulos Mukunda, Narayana, Govinda, Bhagavan, Krisna (Glenn), and Jagadesh (Eddie) who along with their sister Visnu discovered the world outside their walls through films.

Susanne, their mother, had homeschooled them and restricted them in a four bedroom apartment. Their father, Oscar, had placed severe restrictions on the children and his wife and only allowed her to take them out for a ‘scheduled trip’ when he was the sole key holder to the apartment which is a clear indication of varying types of abuse.

Everything changed for Mukunda when he went out for a stroll around his neighbourhood in January 2010 at the age of 15, despite his father’s strict prohibition. Mukunda’s friends, the Angulo boys, search from one movie into another (which was possible since they had many which was their only possession) and kick start their journey in Manhattan by re-enacting scenes from their favorite movies.

Their imagination covered the design of entire performances: all the sets and outfits they wore when playing were made from rubbish found in their apartment. Filmmker Crystal Moselle met them on 1st Avenue when they were dressed as Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs wearing costumes suited for the assigned role she is an SVA graduate. So, gradually, as she gets engaged and interested deepening her relationship with the characters their story starts to develop.

At least, Mukunda’s life looks like that in a movie, and the saddest part is the gradual revealing of his story. The boys do, on the other hand, feel a surge of strength in the risk of spending time outside and no longer succumbing to their father’s psychoses.

The only sorrow when you watch this picture is the face of their mother, who lacks active aggressive behavior and believes that she has dealt with enough already. But there is something good about this story – the real story is however nowhere near its ending.
