Throwback

Motherhood is never easy. Justina Machado’s The Throwback a delightful comedy film about the balancing act of motherhood and family love as well as being a ‘super mom’ can quite easily be described in that one phrase. But the film is not only about the worst times of your life, or in this case your marriage break down, but rather how to deal with those and move forward in a positive way.

With such themes directed by Mario Garcia, the film does not hold back on embracing the Latian mother stereotypes, but the way that’s done is rather fresh. That’s one of the advantages of Latines vying for their own narratives and it perhaps makes The Throwback enjoyable and lively rather than an overbearing critique of a culture whose customs and beliefs are quite foreign to the creator. It’s kind of like when they say I can make fun of my sister, but no one else can.

The Throwback is just that.

Well yes, there are many things that can be ridiculed where our community’s ways are concerned and everyone has a mom like Kate. Is it a surprise that she would snap at some point? No. It is a surprise that she has not snapped before if we are being honest. She has a lot of reasons to snap. In fact, part of me was wishing that she would throw caution to the wind and just go wild for a while. She earned that. Someone else can take care of everything else, for once!

But of course, that is not how life happens and let’s just say the world is not just black and white, there is plenty of gray in neutral tones that can be spoken about when there is a focus on balance, which is why, The Throwback is still Scherfig’s successful and comedic treatment to what the Latine community really is and just really, really fun. If there is any teaching to be taken from The Throwback, it is not the kind that will be shoved down your throat. No instead, this is the type of film that you will just absolutely love and then at the end, when it is all over, you will wonder how it was not obvious to appreciate your mother more.

For sure, you actually could. Yes, I could. In fact, everyone can most likely be able to. There will be times when situations do not turn into what we had envisioned them to be most of the times. And yes, there is a greater extent to which life is usually more complicated than what we would have anticipated it to be.

Nevertheless, for an individual like you who happens to possess a form of “super mom” who manages to come through for you all the time, then you do not have a problem. Or you might have a problem but it may not be that significant. There is no shame in being lucky. And her? Well, she might simply be craving a hug and being reminded that every now and then, she is allowed to take a break from being your mom.

That doesn’t mean she has to go join any wild parties or anything of the sort, even when starting small is alright. However, putting oneself first is never a crime.
