This movie stars Clint Eastwood (“The Good“), and I have only seen one other film in which he has acted. It’s comical to think that all of those scadivans laddies I had been watching for trains. They all seem baffled by Clint.
I’m thankful that I’m sure my sisters are nowhere near as cruel as I am to choose a film for somebody else to review (Feel free to ask Kaleb or Drew about this one). Two Mules For Sister Sara happens to be the second film I chose to review on the recommendation of my sisters and honestly enjoyed it just as much as I enjoyed the first time I watched it. Here’s the skinny for those of you who aren’t savvy about what’s going on:
So to care for the fact that my sisters are not cult followers, I am gonna present them with movie reviews in which I am gonna ask them to choose any movie they want. The first one was ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding,’ and the second was a Clint Eastwood movie. Am glad to say that I came out of the experience unscathed. I was dragged from my morbid cave into the bright sunlight of “ordinary” films and I did not catch fire. The vision remained and I was not traumatized with dreams.
Both were very good films that I would probably not have gone to see.
In TMFSS, our main character is Hogan whom Clint Eastwood portrays. He is a drifter traversing a vast and arid desert on his nameless horse. The plot thickens when he finds a woman being accosted by men. With ease, he kills the three men and approaches his would-be “reward” clad in nothing but a black cloth, probably expecting a “thank you” for rescuing her.
However, the revelation that she is “Sister” Sara puts a halt to the anticipation, His brother has been waiting to know for sorely irritated nuns to reconstruct the areas. That the French foreign legion is looking for Sara, who helps to get money for the Mexican revolution, was the thing she was trying to avoid by stealthily making her way back to Chihuahua to help the revolutionaries. But when the men otherwise sidetracked her, Hogan had just made that switch. To that place where she is headed to offer assistance for the same cause but is the only reason why he’s not deeply caring for such a greater good reasons. The only money he cares about raising is for himself which makes it clear.
They come together as a team, with Sara working as the bodyguard while Hogan uses the intel that Sara provides to complete his task. The film depicts how this couple, who seem an odd couple at first, bicker with each other while trying to save one another’s lives and in the end face off against the French garrison alongside a twist regarding Sister Sara.
There was never a dull moment in this movie as every few minutes you would have Clint shooting or blowing something up. What also makes this film interesting is that according to my mother, this was also the first time I watched a Clint Eastwood movie, and let me say this to you people “Cripes, but Clint Eastwood was young!” Eastwood is great and there is no question why he became an icon. He is an amazing actor and exudes masculinity and strength in every scene. The same can be said about his character, Hogan, as well. This guy managed to behead a rattlesnake, while being dead drunk blew up a locomotive, and got a flaming arrow pulled out from his chest. I felt like I was wearing a sweater to wipe off the excess masculinity that oozed from the screen.
Look, if you are ready to relax and grab a cup of coffee, then you should give this a watch. Also, if you are having a good life in general, then it is also pretty good for a date in terms of rental. You would love this, even if you are not a fan of Westerns. The narrative and the comic relief always manage to keep things interesting, and Eastwood and MacLaine deliver performances that require you to think about these characters. It’s amusing to witness how they banter back and forth, refusing to accept how much they truly need each other. In that regard, their relationship is quite balanced, with each one possessing attributes of the other, and taking turns saving each other’s lives.
I only have two issues with the game. One of them is the horrible soundtrack, which is an over-the-top West-style tune with donkey sounds and random Latin singing. It’s a jumbled mess, absolutely disgusting. The other complaint is regarding the fake blood. Well, with action films being offered in color, things kinda need to be somewhat believable. I found myself more than once wondering how blood could resemble tempura paint. It’s very difficult to sympathize with a character who has been hurt when they look like they just participated in a kindergarten art class that involved finger paints rather than being shot with an arrow.
