2012: Doomsday
2012: Doomsday is the kind of low budget flick by the production house the asylum film that I personally hate. If you’re watching an Asylum film you know what to expect. There is the story, there are characters poorly developed, there are some effects n thought processes which are sensationalized. But who cares! that is not why you watch these films, you watch these films for entertainment, for over the top effects and nonsense science and big bangs!
2012: Doomsday revolves around five individuals who share an inexplicable desire to see the temple of the Mayan civilization; Susan is an ex-paramedic who lost her belief in God; Sarah who’s the spiritually useful one; Dale Midkiff as Dr. Frank Richards, an archaeologist and a “what have I seen this man in?” type of actor who’s supposed to put the pieces together; Lloyd, Sarah’s Dad, played by Cliff De Young, simply needed to payhis bills and obviously, does not credit his daughter’s spiritual nonsense only to suddenly perform a complete 180 faster than any pirouetting ice-skater would; And then there is Wakanna. She serves as the Virgin Mary character for no reason, other than the plot needing religious imagery.
The account revolves around these characters’ attraction to, and journey towards, a Mayan Pyramid in Mexico. Along the way however there are adventures, deaths and accidents and the weirdest of them all is, the fact that Susan’s Grandmother strangely vanishes from the car after suggesting to her granddaughter that maybe it’s time she started believing in God. So, was she a divine messenger? Was she an alien who had vital information to deliver to the planet? Who gives a shit? I mean Susan obviously doesn’t as she walks around in serenity and acts as if absolutely nothing has occurred and in her world, vanishing grandmothers are quite normal.
Now, of course, we are not supposed to delve too deeply into such matters this is not that kind of movie, but I did find a lot of the religious connotations and symbolism excessive like a heavily pregnant woman, whose foetus is described as being the world’s redeemer? Really?
This is the kind of film that is good, if you are sitting at home on a duvet day or have just had a couple of pints at the local bar, you do not have to concentrate too much and even if you fall asleep for twenty minutes in between, so what but if you want a film like global disaster and mayhem in the Michael Bay style of 2012 then I think this film isn’t for you!
