Hard Times
The setting of this movie was Ulster, but it was shot in Devon. This is a very heavy-handed comedy that is all booze, blarney and the blessed Mary. The story revolves around four sex-starved under-employed men in a depressed Irish village who decide to get rich quick by hijacking a lorry-load of Viagra at Belfast airport and selling it in Holland. However, having watched Ocean’s Eleven, The Italian Job and Reservoir Dogs, they mess up the heist big time. They hide the loot down a holy well and then some American security specialists sent across the Atlantic by Pfizer come after them.
Unfortunately again for them, the drugs seep into the well and there is a veritable Niagara of Viagra that sweeps through the village causing predictable results among young and old, straight and gay locals as well as visitors putting this town on par with County Mayo’s Knock as another miracle-working place of pilgrimage. If it were an Ealing film (which it tries so hard to be), it might be called “Viagra Galore”, but wordy statements distancing Pfizer from production at beginning and end suggest that this is all an erectile tissue of lies. I only really laughed once during this whole thing when one of these unwilling celibates sadly says: “The only way I’ll get laid in this parish is if I climb up a chicken’s arse and wait.”
