Saturn Return Review
Once again, Isaki Lacuesta shines with Saturn Return this time in collaboration with Pol Rodriguez. It is a thinly veiled examination of a couple of difficult years for Los Planetas, one of Spain’s biggest indie bands during the 1990s. Edgy, dreamy and fragmented, Saturn takes the raw material and makes it both highly watchable and artistically satisfying.
Christopher Zalla’s Radical won best Ibero-American picture at Malaga after playing Sundance, where it was deemed “conventional tearjerker about an inspiring teacher” which “benefits from a terrific ensemble.”
Celia Rico’s Little Loves (Los pequeños amores) won the Special Jury Award at the festival.
Returning to a daughter-mother relationship of Journey to My Mother’s Room, produced by Arcadia Motion Pictures, on fire after backing Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s The Beasts Oscar-nominated animated feature Robot Dreams and Netflix hit Burning Body, Little Loves sees Rico this time take as its plot driver the sudden dependence of a redoubtable mother portrayed by Adriana Ozores who won best supporting actress.
Álex Montoya made good on his promise in Lucas with notably stylish and moving family drama La Casa which took screenplay and score as well as the festival’s Audience Award along with great reviews.
Making good on their briefs as Latin American-market specialists, Latido Films looks vindicated in dropping at Málaga three significant plays rather than waiting for Cannes, Locarno or an Autumn fest now near sweeping top awards with titles like Little Loves.
“Saturn Return”, “La Casa” have sparked large sales interest distribution in some important territories while all three films have seen sales agents pulling out wallet checks for further titles when they might not otherwise have done so,” said Antonio Saura from Latido Films to Variety.
