Liam Cunningham and Sasha Luss have joined the cast of a Belgian-produced World War I film called “The Last Front.”

Although Irish actor Cunningham is best-known for playing Davos Seaworth on “Game of Thrones,” he will be appearing in wartime Belgium rather than a blood-stained battle for the Iron Throne. Meanwhile, Luss, who starred in Luc Besson’s most recent thriller “Anna,” will also feature in the movie.

Julien Kerknawi will direct the film as his first full-length feature. It was adapted from his short, “A Broken Man,” which was filmed in Flemish but the English-language movie is set during the first days of the conflict as the German war machine advances, and what became known as the Rape of Belgium. Leonard (Cunningham), a widower farmer-cum-war hero, and his family are thrown into a war they do not understand. Luss plays Louise, girlfriend to Leonard’s son, Adrien.

A detachment of German troops is trying to get to safety in France and takes Leonard’s youngest daughter Johanna hostage. As events unfold, the farmer fights for freedom within his community.

Kerknawi said he wants to move away from World War I tropes deliberately with this movie. “No trenches, no left-side Allies, right-side Germans” he said. “I want to show people how they themselves handled the First World War…how they had to fight and struggle.”

He added: “With ‘The Last Front’ I’m depicting a story that has happened over a thousand times in early days of Great War, but has never been translated to big screen before.”

“To dream about bringing Julien’s story about family hardship into world and then see motion picture unfold before your eyes is truly remarkable,” added Van der Heyden of Harald House-productions who will produce alongside Virginie Hayet.
