World Ends at Camp Z is a low budget zombie movie that doesn’t seem to know whether it wants to be a horror comedy or just regular comedy. Directed by Ding Wang, this horror comedy is actually just a boring waiting game as interchangeable characters are introduced, bicker in unfunny fashion, and wait for zombies to show up and eat them.

The World Ends at Camp Z stars Anne Carolyn Binette as Vanessa. Unfortunately, Vanessa’s job involves traveling to some R.V campsite her boss has purchased so she can assess it as an asset. She makes this trip amid word that a pandemic is spreading one that could kill you. The radio tells us people are being advised to shelter at home and wear masks; this is supposed to be relevant, but the movie lacks the weight needed to make such references anything more than clumsy stabs at real-world tragedy.

At the camp, she’s greeted by Julian (Dean Persons), whose Uncle owns the camp and is selling it over Julian’s objections. Julian quickly becomes confrontational with Vanessa who just wants him not to do everything he keeps doing that inconveniences her even though Clay (Osawa Muska), his best friend and also the park’s manager, tells him not to everything he keeps doing.

But despite how much Julian hates her when she shows up they bicker like two people who just met in an obvious sitcom romance episode it seems like the movie has other plans for them both because they’re young and attractive but also because of how hard it tries to make them obviously be falling in love with each other. Hate turns to flirting immediately only for Aaron (Michael Czemarys) Vanessa’s boss who is also her boyfriend to show up with three friends: Nate (James Chapman), Max (Arthur Gallant) and Andrea (Rafaela Solomao). Aaron had Nate bring Max who brought Andrea; if we were watching The Real World: Camp Z, this is when we’d first hear someone say, “I didn’t come here to make friends.”

In order to make Aaron’s arrival less obnoxious, he arrived with three people more obnoxious than himself. There is Nate (James Chapman), Max (Arthur Gallant), and Andrea (Rafaela Solomao), and while the guys are loud and interchangeable, Andrea is a cringe worthy take on a modern model and influencer, a vapid character whose fate is sealed the minute she shows up. In fact, it’s not hard to determine anyone’s ultimate fate in The World Ends at Camp Z.

Something about the look of The World Ends at Camp Z betrays its intention to be actually gory or scary or anything but what it looks like. That is to say that this movie wants desperately to look like serious zombie-virus horror film but can only afford to look low rent like direct-to-video bins of the 1990s low rent. It’s poignantly hilarious seeing actors try so hard playing straight against how very silly they look next everything else that’s happening around them in this movie.

Did I like anything about “The World Ends at Camp Z?” Honestly, no. If I had to say something positive it would be that I liked the committed performance by Osawa Muska. Occasionally forced into the role of dignified native American stereotype, Muska still manages to break out of it with sheer force of will. He’s the only character that seems competent throughout all the chaos and actually thrives as soon as zombies show up but this just makes his fate more obvious: he nobly sacrifices himself for the young white protagonists.

Besides Muska though, my interest was piqued a little bit in Act Three when the movie starts trying to sell us on how serious this low-rent affair is. The ending is bleak and I won’t ruin it for any other zombie fans out there, even ones who love bad movies. Let me just say that I appreciated a touch of nihilism in those last few moments. “The World Ends at Camp Z” can be rented for streaming now and if you’ll watch any old zombie movie then I suppose you’re who this was made for
